Mykola Bashan was born on October 9th, 1904 in Kamianets-Podilsky, died on November 23 1983 in Kyiv. He is a poet, a writer, a translator, a political and culture figure, a full member of the Academy of Sciences. One of the most prominent representatives of the literary renaissance of the 1920s, he wrote screenplays, edited the journal ‘Cinema”.With the outbreak of war in 1941 Bazhan emerged as a leading political figure. He was the editor of the newspaper “Za Radiansky Ukrainu” and the head of the Writers’ Union of Ukraine. From 1958 he headed the editorial board of the Ukrainian Soviet Encyclopedia publishing house and served as the editor-in-chief of many of its publications.
