Olexandr Koshyts
(1875 – 1944)
A famous conductor, a great talented composer, he was born on August 30th in the village of Romashka, Kanivskyi district, the land of T. Shevchenko and Nechyi-Levytskyi.
From 1909 O. Koshyts conducted the Choir of Kyiv University. From 1919 he is the conductor of Kyiv Opera. In 1919 he organized the Ukrainian State Choir.
He moved to New-York City in 1912 where he collected liturgical music, arranged and popularized Ukrainian folk music. He also documented the choir’s travels in the memoirs “With Song Round the World”. In 1941 he spent his summer months teaching in Winnipeg, Canada, since that time he had been living there. He died in 1944 at the age of 69.
The personal archive of O. Koshyts remains in the Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
